Going Batty

A couple of nights ago I went to bed early and was sleeping peacefully, when Adrian came barging in. He’d been downstairs watching a movie. “There’s a bat in the house!” he exclaimed. After I recovered from being jolted awake, I was suddenly thrust into terror. A bat!!! In the house??? How? I reacted quickly…by hiding under the covers. Adrian came back in the room asking for the nets I'd bought the kids for pond dipping. He thought he could try to catch it. I stayed under the covers. “Now it’s upstairs!!” he reported, helpfully. I was royally freaking out at that point. What if it finds it's way into our room? I got up and quickly shut the door and then returned to my post under the blankets. What if Adrian doesn’t catch it?? I’d have to deal with the thing the next day. “I’m gonna open the door and see if it’ll fly out!” he called. Oh God. Please fly out. Please fly out. “Yup. It flew out”, he said.

Sigh. Relief. But then I couldn't sleep. I kept imagining more bats. No. There couldn't be anymore, right? Even though we didn't know how the one bat got inside in the first place. An hour later I finally eased myself back to sleep. The next morning I was telling my friend, L, about it and she nicely informed me that her aunt once had a bat infestation in her house. Apparently, they were all in her attic. Great! Now when I walk into a room (especially in the basement) I can’t help looking up to the ceiling for a bat that may or may not be there. Oh yeah. I’m getting Adrian to look in the attic this weekend.

You have helped to start my weekend with 'laughter'. In tears of laughter - to be exact!!

The poor wee thing - panic stricken - the bat I mean!!

I guess you could go singing in the basement and the attic the following song "Like a Bat out of Hell" - see what happens..

Enjoy the weekend.

Oh you poor thing! LOL...I can just picture you hiding under the covers...I think, I KNOW I'd do the same thing!!!

My Mom had a bat fly into her house last summer. She was so freaked out by it and she had just had surgery on her wrist and didn't know what to do and how to get it out of her house... so she called 911 and the dispatcher laughed so hard at her and told her to wait till morning and have someone help her. My mom was so scared she stayed in the garage till morning and got her neighbor. They were able to find the bat and get it outside. It came in through the overhead vent on her stove...so she has it taped off all the time in the summer now. We saw TONS of bats everynight in Minnesota....they freak me out!!!

I would have reacted the same way! I am terrified of those kind of things bats, rats and mice scare the crud out of me. Once we lived in a house near a field and a few ended up getting in our basement adn had babies. I wouldn't go down there for the longest time long after the last one we saw and occasionally they would get upstairs. The boys thought it was hilarious if I saw one because I would end up jumping on furniture to stay away until someone got rid of it. Also since most of them were in our basement, which was wear our laundry room was. Izzak learned to do laundry and he and Kelly had to laundry for the longest time!

~ Bat’s –r-Welcome ~

There was I sleeping in my bed
Oh, what a lovely bed
Sound asleep was I
Snoring one, two, three.

Up popped Adrian
Shouting aloud
“a bat’s in the house
we need to get it out”.

Now such is my slumber
That I would not assist
My poor hubby
In his hour of need.

Instead I had an idea
Put the blankets
Over my head instead
What a good idea.

Adrian shouted again
This time in pain
“the bat is upstairs”
quick as a flash
my door did I close.

And so again to bed
Thought I
To hide under the blanket
Let Adrian fight this beast.

Adrian did his duty
And the bat escaped outdoors
Now how did the bat enter?
Adrian thought
“I bet it was her indoors”.

Ha! I love the poem above.

And I didn't realize there were bats around here. Apparently I live with the theory of "If I haven't seen one, they don't exist."

Oh my. Yes bats exist here. I remember sitting out by the fire with neighbours when we first moved into the house and commenting there were no mosquito's around. The neighbour piped up and said "Oh that's because we have a lot of bats around here and they keep the mosquitoes away." After that, I swore there were bats flying overhead and I could even hear them. Gullible much. I am such a sucker. Although I'm sure there are bats around. Just not the hundreds he said there were.

You did the right thing. The safety of the covers are best. I hear sheets are kryptonite to bats. *snicker*

Very funny, but going under the covers is a good idea since you have all that hair for it to get caught in. Adrian doesn't have such a problem. My mom always said that about bats--that they go for the hair. She was terrified of them and moths (they flit about the same). When the nets fail and the open door fails, the best thing for a bat is a bat. My dad did one in with one after half an hour of chasing. Playing ball in his youth helped. I leave a disclaimer: I in no way encourage cruelty to animals. It just happened that way.

I often see them in the early hours of evening flying on our street ... eating bugs.

Stay outside, thank you kindly.

Peter - I'm glad that I could be of service. ;) Funny poem, too. Thank-you!

Heaher - That would have totally been me. Hiding in the garage. I have some mouse in the house stories that are similar.

Terri - Oh thanks! Another thing to worry about. Did it have babies down here????? My computer is in the basement - you might be just find that I'm blogging even less now. :)

Emma - Oh yes. I see them flying around outside at night quite often. Now in the city might be a different issue.

Joy - I think everyone knows about sheets being kryptonite. Not only to bats. They work against mice, potential robbers, thunder storms, boogeymen, and pretty much anything that goes bump the night. Eh hem. I really am 33 by the way - not 13! I don't hide for everything. For ex. I know there's no such thing as a boogeyman...right??

Dawn - !!!!! Okay. Whatever it takes to get rid of flying mics (which is essentially what bats are) but man! I totally can not picture us (Adrian) running around the house wielding a bat trying to hit a...bat.

Adrian told us about the hair thing. We were telling the kids about the bat in the morning, and he was reaussuring us that bats don't fly down around your head. Umm. Well that is unless you have a lot of hair, he says. You should've seen J's face while her hand went up to her head.

Pamela - Amen. Stay outside!!

I'm sure it was a funny sight, but I would have had the exact same reaction. My grandmother used to tell a story of when a bat got in her house shortly after she was married. I just wouldn't want it to happen.

That is funny!! Last summer we had a bat that hung just above our entrance door. The kids named it I think and of course our middle daughter wanted to keep it. I know that they don't do anything to people usually. Most of that is from the movies.
