Brings back memories of the plague that struck the area in '88; Canadian tire had their record sales in snow shovels that summer. Hope they don't make it here. They are in some towns west of us, just as bad, from what I hear. Ahhhh... they have us surrounded.
Okay, all you westerners seem to know just exactly what you're seeing here. Me, I'm mystified. What kind of caterpillar are they? Where did they come from? Why do they swarm on buildings?
**cringe** I'm squirming just looking at the pictures. Back in middle school, the same creepy crawlers used to infest the trees behind the cafeteria and they'd crawl into the cafeteria during lunch....eeewww.
They are called tent caterpillars (don't know the Latin name); I think they become moths and they eat leaves off virtually everything, they swarm everything (ie hydroplane on highway, shovel walk, darken windows), because in these situations, they are everywhere. They leave when they finish eating all the leaves. They can kill plants and even trees this way.
I remember those back in the 80's too - it was really bad on my parents' acreage and I think I pretty much spent the entire summer indoors because they were everywhere!
NASTY!!!!! I hate anything that does that! I'd be spraying that thing with whatever I could find to kill them... maybe pay the kids per caterpillar!!! But by the looks of these pictures I'd go broke!
No Way! I've heard they think this area is going to be bad this year but I'm hoping they're wrong. Sorry, butterflies or not I'd be putting something on them to get rid of them. Out here where I am we're all worried about that blasted pine beetle that's supposedly making it's way into Alberta. Never ending to what we have to worry about.

Oh, my, caterpillars are fine in the tens, but in the millions... Sheesh, No, Thank You. It looks like they are taking over the world.

It's hard to believe something so ugly can become so beautiful. Still, I'd be pouring boiling water all over them.

I had to comment I had nightmares about these caterpillars...it reminds me of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom....
