It's Dark In Here
I am writing these poems
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.
So please excuse the handwriting
Which may not be too clear.
But this afternoon by the lion's cage
I'm afraid I got too near.
And I'm writing these lines
From inside a lion,
And it's rather dark in here.

I love this book. I remember, like it was yesterday (if yeserday was 23 years ago), sitting on the floor of the library and thumbing through the pages of "Where the Sidewalk Ends". I would read over and over poems like: "Edge of the World", "Boa Constrictor", and "Melinda Mae". I must confess that I don't read poems normally. I find them confusing most of the time, but this book of poems is just right for my level of poetry intellect!
And now my children love the book as well. I bought it a few years ago and now and then they bring me the book and we spend a hour or so reading our favourite poems...like we did this morning.
Tree House
A tree houe, a free house,
A secret you and me house,
A high up in the leafy branches
Cozy as can be house.
A street house, a neat house,
Be sure and wipe your feet house
Is not my kind of house at all -
Let's go live in a tree house.

I love, love, love Shel Silverstein books! I remember sitting in a library reading them also. I also would check them out over and over and memorize those poems. I will have to check out the site with the kiddo's later tonight after work!
Shel Silverstein is a must-read for anyone of any age. His poems are pure genius. Thanks for the reminder - time to dig out my dusty copy and read it to my kids!
I love Shel Silverstein too! My favorite book of his is The Giving Tree...it such a classic. I also love Where The Sidewalks end...
I must have been beamed up by a UFO - I don't recall Shel Silverstein = How did such a popular poet escape me???
Will have to check it out!!
Luv the poems - thanks for sharing.
I've never heard of him or that book. Maybe the kids have seen it before.
Have you ever read a Hank the Cow Dog book to the kids? If not, I am sure you could borrow a couple to see if they like them.
I don´t know this book and his writer Silverstein. But it sounds good.
We LOVE Shel Silverstein as well! My kids' favorite is "Stupid Pencil Maker", they recite it endlessly some days.
There's a local homeschooling mom here who writes similar poetry. Her name is Tiffany Stone, and her books are Floyd the Flamingo and Baaad Animals. Lots of fun!
