Sydney Poitier was recently on Oprah discussing his book, “A Measure of a Man”. I always record Oprah so I just watched the episode. The book was Oprah’s Book Club choice, and therefore the discussion took place over dinner with a few lucky viewers. It was what one viewer, a gentleman, said that registered with me.
He said that he uses the book as a kind of “How To” manual for raising his boys into men. The main point that he took from the book and now stresses to his boys is, “Know who you are”. He goes onto say that if someone accuses you of something or calls you a name – well, you know who you are. That does not mean you. Let it fall away like an autumn leaf because you know who you are. Then, they showed a quote from Sydney Poitier that’s in the book: “Someone asked me, Who are you? I’m the me I choose to be”.
I love that and I love that I heard that message today of all days. I am coming to know who I am. I know what my intentions are so, if someone says something about me, then I can let those comments just slide off. I don’t HAVE to get all pissed off and defensive. I want to, of course, but I’ll choose to talk myself out of that space. No. Instead I will look and listen to what the person said. I’ll consider it. I’ll ask myself some questions. Are they right? Do I have something to learn? Is that me? Then I can safely embrace or disregard the exchange. You see, I think if we get angry then there is some thing/issue we have to look at. Something to learn. Otherwise, we truly wouldn’t care.
I’ve heard the message today, and I’ve written it down because I’m sure I’ll have to remind myself of it in the future. But isn’t that the way of all lessons? It takes a few falls and stumbles to really “get it”.

I have always found Sydney Poitier to be a character of sensitivity to all things - as perhaps depicted in his many movies. An actor who I have the highest respect for.
The comments raised from his book and which you have picked up on are indeed 'poignant'. The quote "I'me the me I choose to be". Empahsises a great deal of the person and in particular their character.
The fact that you had picked up this wonderful quotation from Sydney Poitiers book - was perhaps meant to be... A strength of support from words can mean so very much in times of doubt within ourselves.
May you find comfort from his words and in your remarkable abilities - which continue to shine through in your "Journals".
Blessings on this a beautiful weekend - here in Scotland.
There are a lot of great self help books. One just has to read them and take in the message. And one book doesn't have all the answers and some are better than others.
My supervisor at work gave me a great book. The chapters are not that long so us men can remain focused on the message. But the content changed the way I look at things at work and for the most part at home. I need to read it again.
Sydney Poitier is just pure class...someone to be greatly respected.
I think that is an important message that you have the power to be who you want to be...If I am not happy with things going on in my life I know I am the one who needs to do something about it and start making changes.
I'm going to have to get his book thanks for sharing...I love it that I can come here and get all the good Oprah stuff cause I always miss her show. I love her but I'm always busy when it is on. I guess I need to start recording it...and get XM radio like you!! ;)
Sydney Poitier. Pure heaven. The first time I saw him on "To Sir With Love" I said I was going to marry him. LOL so silly. But I love the man and so wanted to catch Oprah when she had him on. I just love the idea of having a nice meal while talking over a book, and then to have the author there. People just don't do things like that anymore. Or at least not the crowd I hang around.
I have Sydney's book on my night stand and plan on reading it during my recovery time. It's all I can do to not pick it up. I couldn't agree more with Heather. Pure class.
As for 'knowing who you are', I think it's so important. God I think back to my younger years and no having a clue. Now, I would still like to change a couple things but I am at a point in my life where I am definitely who I choose to be :o) Always good subjects Debbie!!
