I'm Feeling Better

I had a great sleep last night so I'm feeling a bit better today. The fog that I been living in for the past week seems to be lifting finally. Do you know what I mean by fog? It's the only way I can describe how I felt.

On to school: I'm finding it a challenge somewhat to juggle teaching them both at the same time. I'm trying to encourage independent learning, but they still both need so help from me. At this point, I try to give one a project that they can do on their own while working with the other one, and then switch. For instance today dd is going to do Reading Reflex while ds does journaling. Afterward I'm going to introduce the Spelling Power program to ds while dd does some journaling. Math is a bit more difficult because there are a lot of hands on projects. I really don't know how people do it with five children! Jane, got any words of wisdom? I realize, though, that an unschooler’s day probably looks a bit different. :)

Next they'll have a bit of a break, and when they come back we'll do math. Dd will work on Math U See while ds does an activity from Distance Learning. I think it'll be a fun morning. Ds enjoys writing in his journal and dd enjoys Reading Reflex. It'll be interesting to see how Spelling Power goes. We'll likely also play Group Ten again.

On the subject of Group Ten, I contacted Peggy Kaye (the author of Games for Math) via email. I thought that I'd better be sure that she's okay with my describing her game on my blog. She's already replied. She said that as long as I describe the games in my own words that it's fine. It's so cool to have talked with the author - even if it's just through email. She also posts from time to time on the Games for Learning Yahoo group to which I'm a member. She seems like a cool lady.

After lunch the kids will read aloud, and then I’ll read to them from the last of our library books that need to be returned. We have to go to the library this afternoon to sort out my membership. I have to renew and pay my overdue fines. :0( We’ll get some groceries and come home. That’s it – our day.
