Threat Levels

Got this email from a friend...

** THREAT LEVELS **

The British have reacted to the recent terrorism alerts by raising their security level from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross." Londoners have not been "A Bit Cross" since the blitz in 1940, when tea supplies all but ran out.

Terrorists have been recategorized from "Tiresome" to a "Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French Government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide." The only two higher levels in
France are "Surrender" and "Collaborate." The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

It's not only the English and French that are on a heightened level of alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout Loudly and Excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain: "Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbour" and "Lose."

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday, as is customary, and the only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

Terrorism is not joke!I think about what happened at Oklahoma City when i go to pick up my sister at a goverenment building,or what happened in Tokyo when i take the LRT to a football game,or having all bags searched and/or having to be patted down before going throu the game.Or what happened in Madrid when you go on a trip with Via (train)

I have given your comment quite a bit of thought. I agree, of course, that terrorism is no laughing matter. Firstly, however, I would like to say that the joke in question does not make fun of terrorism itself. Rather it is poking fun at specific countries.

On and off throughout the day I have pondered about the appropriateness of joking about serious world matters. I consider television variety shows like “The Rick Mercer Report” among many others that do this very thing. There are also the editorial cartoons that are in most newspapers. These constantly make fun of serious issues. I think that humans have been using humour to make sense of senseless things for a long time and will likely continue. I don’t think it means the issue itself is considered funny. I truly believe that we need to have a sense of humour in life. (otherwise the terrorists have won) We need to speak out about the ridiculous and sometimes humour is the best way to reach people. Just my two cents.

By the way, thanks for giving me something interesting to think about today! :0)

Yes, that too.

What is your response to my opinion that we use humour to make sense of difficult subjects? Do you find humour in editorial magazines or do you find them in poor taste?

oops - I meant cartoons.

Anyone for 'tea'?

One always has to be prepared for every eventuality!!

One also has milk and sugar in abundance - well stocked - is well armed!!

Must admit different codes - to what I remember - perhaps they have upgraded from my "dad's army" days!!

Wonderful post Debbie!!
